4mg Tizanidine overview

Tizanidine is medical drug, which is used to control muscle spasms. It is effective for short-term treatment of patients with spinal injuries.

Also the medicine is well established as a medicament for spasms in multiple sclerosis. In some cases, it can be prescribed as an anticonvulsant or hypnotic medication.


The drug can be used to treat painful muscle spasms in various cases of neurological diseases, such as

  • chronic myelopathy,
  • cerebral palsy,
  • traumatic brain injury,
  • degenerative spinal disease (including rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and other seronegative spondylitis),
  • disseminated sclerosis,
  • and diseases of the spine (including cervical and facet syndromes, osteochondrosis, spondylosis and hemiplegia).

Coated tablets, that contain 4mg Tizanidine, are widely used for pain relief after surgery.

Mechanism of action

4mg Tizanidine coated tablets reduce high tone and the resistance of muscles during passive movements, relieve spasms of muscles and increase the strength of arbitrary cuts.

After a single oral administration, the medicine is rapidly and almost completely absorbed.

Cmax is reached after 1-2 hours after ingestion. Nearly 70 % of the drug is excreted in the urine.

Contraindications and precautions

Do not use the medicine if you are pregnant, breast-feeding, you have an allergic reaction to the drug components, or you have chronic renal and hepatic disease or myasthenia gravis.

4mg Tizanidine pills should not be used in infants and teenagers under 18 years.

Alcohol and tranquilizers can increase the sedative-hypnotic effects of the drug. Prescribe the medicine with caution to persons, whose work requires quick physical and mental reactions.

Use with caution in elderly persons. If you are taking the medicine, you should be aware, that the combined use of Tizanidine and antihypertensive medicine (including diuretics) can cause bradycardia and hypotension.

Adverse effects and dosage

4mg Tizanidine coated tablets are generally well tolerated by patients. The probability of adverse effects depends on the dose of the medicine. In small doses side effects are unlikely.

The most common side effects are

  • dizziness,
  • muscle weakness,
  • somnolence,
  • fatigue,
  • sleep disturbances,
  • hypertension or hypotension,
  • sickness,
  • gastro-intestinal disturbances,
  • dry mouth,
  • bradycardia,
  • anxiety,
  • hallucinations.

If you decide to use 4mg Tizanidine coated tablets, you should discuss dosage with your doctor.

To stop painful spasms of skeletal muscles, the drug is used at a dosage of 2-4mg three times a day.

In severe cases, the medicine is recommended to take before sleep at dosage of 2-4mg.

For the treatment of neurological diseases drug is used 6 mg per day, divided into three portions, the first few days, and the dose is increased every 3-7 days up to 2-4mg.

The optimal therapeutic effect is usually achieved with a dose of 12-24mg/day, divided into 3-4 doses.

Time length of medication depends on the severity of the disease and should be administered by your doctor.

The maximum daily dose of 4mg Tizanidine tablets should not exceed 36 mg.
